In 2008 RED BOX plans to make a massive effort to become a greener and more ethical company and we know many of our customers want to make a similar effort. What we're most concerned about at the moment is:
Promoting Environmental Awareness
World Environment Day on the 5th of June provided us with a fantastic chance to highlight some of the things we can all do to meet the challenge of climate change.
Our Staff: We calculated that staff travel to and from the workplace makes up 15% of our annual carbon footprint so we decided to run a voluntary 'no cars day' to encourage our staff to travel by public transport, bicycle or foot. Our aim was to have an empty car park on the day and with the exception of a couple of cars, we very nearly achieved that! RED BOX staff had the added incentive of the chance to win a monthly travelcard for London if they answered all questions correctly in a small eco-quiz which tested their knowledge on environmental issues.
Our Customers: FSC, organic, Fairtrade, biodegrable and recycled products are available throughout our product ranges and we are very keen for our customers to choose the eco-friendly alternative where possible. On the day we ran a promotion where each time a customer spent more than £50 on any of our eco-friendly ranges in the Essentials catalogue, we would donate the cost of planting a tree with registered charity Trees for Cities.
Future Customers: We generate a lot of interest in RED BOX through our website from companies that know less about our company and its green credentials. To help us create awareness about our ethics we gave away a green goody box containing samples of the different eco-friendly ranges that we offer to any non-customers that registered with RED BOX on the day. |
Supplying our customers with eco-friendly products
We've crammed lots of products into our Essentials 2008 catalogue which meet stingent ethical standards. They're easy to spot because they are highlighted in green and we have created a set of symbols which help to identify why they are ethical. Click here to read more about them. |

Reducing packaging
Say hello to our really useful, reusable delivery box.
We package and deliver most goods in our own red cardboard boxes. Made from tough 100% recycled cardboard if you give them back to your RED BOX driver we will reuse them again and again and will ultimately send them off to be recycled. But we don't mind if you want to reuse them for other things, just as long as they're being useful. |

Recycling
We're working hard to boost recycling levels. You can get special bins from us to encourage your fellow workers into recycling more and we provide a free toner-recycling and Xyron-consumables recycling service. Just hand-back used, empty cartridges to your RED BOX driver and we'll send them off to be recycled for you. |

Our carbon footprint
We believe that global climate change can only be addressed if each and every one of us takes steps to reduce our carbon footprint. RED BOX is actively seeking ways to reduce its carbon emissions. We have already switched to a green energy supplier and have streamlined our delivery schedule to enhance our carbon-efficiency.
In partnership with the CarbonNeutral Company, RED BOX is now a carbon neutral organisation. Click here to open our carbon neutral factsheet. |

Working with Trees for Cities
Whenever a new customer joins us we'll donate the cost of planting a tree to registered charity Trees for Cities (No. 1032154). Trees for Cities will be planting native species, with a particular focus on oak and a mix of hazel, field maple, hawthorn and alder, around Sidcup place, south London during planting season.
Planting and nurturing trees is a recognised way of offsetting carbon emissions, but it's also a chance to improve the quality of London's natural areas for the enjoyment and well-being of its inhabitants.
We have planted 150 young whips in the London area so far. |
